300th Anniversary Poster Competition with Primary Times
It is 300 years ago this year since Kirkleatham Old Hall first opened as a Free School for poor boys of the area. The building became a museum in 1981. Our activities for the summer holidays are on the theme of Kirkleatham’s 300th Anniversary.
Help Kirkleatham celebrate its 300th anniversary by entering our colouring competition.
Use your imagination to add your drawings of objects you think the museum should have to represent the Past, Present and Future.
We have nine prizes on offer which include a Family Tea in Lillies Café at the Museum, a Goody Bag from the Museum shop and a box of delicious muffins delivered to your door by the ‘Fabulous Bakin’ Boys’.
There will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes in the following age ranges:
5 yrs & under 6-8 yrs 9—11 yrs

Backpacks may be borrowed for up to 2 hours, but don’t forget to bring Explorer Eddie back ready to meet the next Museum Explorers!

300th Birthday Treasure Hunt
It is 300 years ago this year since Kirkleatham Old Hall first opened. When it opened in 1710 it was a Free School for poor boys of the area. The building became a museum in 1981.
Throughout the holidays be a Museum Detective and go on a mystery trail around the museum. How much history do you know?? Find picture-clue answers to our 300th Birthday quiz around the Museum grounds.

Rivers, Myths, Monsters!
Linked to this year's IAS theme, an exhibition on the theme of water, produced by students studying for the MA in Museum and Artefact Studies at Durham University.
Dive into the exciting world of myths and meet the amazing river monsters!
- Prepare to encounter the terrifying snake demon of India.
- Discover the dangers of becoming a Chinese dragon.
- See the disturbing rivalry of the Egyptian Gods.
- Uncover Durham's very own monster lurking in the River Wear.
In this exhibition you can explore how different cultures use rivers in their mythology, and the different monsters they imagine living there. You can see how these myths influence the objects people use. You can even make up your own monster and have a go at creating your own myth based on objects from the museum.

'Seek knowledge even as far as China': a celebration of 50 years of the Oriental Museum, Durham
The Oriental Museum was officially opened on 28
th May 1960. This exhibition traces the history of the museum and its collections from its origins in the teaching collections of the University's Department of Oriental Studies to the present day.
The exhibition looks at some of the key figures and major events in the history of the museum and features some of the treasures of the museum's collections not usually on display to the public.
